I have spent years playing counter-strike. I have always had a slow computer and slow internet connection so I have spent also years trying to find ways to perfect the playability of the game.
Things like Ping (latency), frames per second, connection stabilty, rates, and so forth.
So as to not leave you all hanging I will share a few things for now before I finish the full write-up.
During the game you can press a key to open what is called the "CONSOLE".
When you open the console there is a text box where you can enter in commands to the console.
Lets deal with rates.
There are 3 rates which are the most important. The values of which to set these rates I will get to.
1)"rate" This is the command you type in the console to see the current value your "rate" is set. Rate is the transfer of bandwidth, such as the bytes/sec. It ranges from 2000-25,000. Higher allows for more data which creates a smoother gameplay.
2)"cl_updaterate" this command is how many times per second your computer (the client) updates or retrieves data form the "server". It ranges from 10-101. It acts like the frames per second of network traffic that transforms into your view and what you see. Example, if you set it to 10, your guns recoil will act as though it has low fps.
3) "cl_cmdrate" this command is how many times per second the "client" sends data to the "sever". This setting also ranges from 10-101.
As for recommended values.
This is a relative thing.
It depends on your connection. I will get into it later.
If you have something fast like cable or DSL
I recommend starting from
rate 10000
cl_cmdrate 30
cl_updaterate 20
These are the default settings.
You can raise the "cl_" commands by values of "1" but I usually go by values of "10's". example 20, 30 , 40 , 50, 60.
Typically Cmdrate can go higher than updaterate.
The problem with too high of an updaterate is that you will get ping spikes...or "choke" as its called.
This can increase latency during the game and this is the opposite of which your are trying to achieve.
I also dont recommend going over "60" for the "cl_" rates since this is often where most people's frames per second run at.
You can use the command "net_graph 1" or "net_graph 3" or "net_graph 2"
net_graph 1 is best, to observe what your settings is doing to your game........
